Chapter 16

Peaches’ third visit to The Next was after she was in a car wreck. She had no recollection of the incident, but the police report said that it looked like she fell asleep at the wheel of a stolen car that flipped several times before coming to rest in a ravine.

Sharon thought Peaches looked genuinely surprised to be sitting across from her again. After the surprise wore off, Peaches slumped in her translucent chair, let out a long sigh and asked, “Why in the world am I back here again?” Sharon knew the answer, after seeing Peaches more than once she thought that Peaches should know the answer too. But Sharon thought that she should go into the standard response that they gave every client, just in case Peaches had forgotten.

“Peaches you’re here because in your prior existence…” but Sharon didn’t get to finish. Peaches interrupted, “No dammit, I know that speech. You gave it to me the last two times that I was here. I want to know why I’m here now.” Peaches sat up a little straighter in her translucent chair and began to weep. After a few moments of anger and sorrow she managed to compose herself. Sharon sat stock straight behind her translucent desk and waited patiently for Peaches to continue.

“Something is wrong.”

Sharon interjected, “Yes, something is wrong. Or it was wrong, that’s how you ended up here.” Peaches’ head turned a little to the side in confusion and she said, “I know, I know that’s why I’m here. But I don’t know why I’m here.” It was Sharon’s turn to tilt her head sideways in confusion. “I don’t understand your question. I have no idea how you ended up before me, all I know is that in your prior existence you died. I don’t know the circumstances that led up to, or the cause of, your death. But you know that, I’ve told you that on your prior visits to The Next.”

Peaches was getting frustrated, and suddenly realized that she was unable to move her right arm. But she could still talk, so she exercised the one thing that she still had control over. “I mean something was wrong while I was still alive.” Sharon looked at her with an expression that said please tell me more. So, Peaches continued. “Things were weird after I went back the last time. I, I blacked out a lot.” Sharon had no idea what ‘blacked out’ meant, and the puzzled look on her face conveyed that to Peaches. “I had these large gaps in time.” Peaches sighed, not sure how to explain what she had been experiencing, but she continued. “I would lose time. Sometimes days, or even weeks. I would wake up in strange places and not know how I got there. I woke up in a psychiatrist’s office, I was in the middle of a session but I don’t know why I was there or how I ended up there. I woke up in some
